Monday Memo 3/25/19

Greetings Families,

We had an Open Circle today to discuss my upcoming medical leave. As many of you know, I have an acute tear of the ACL, so I am having ACL reconstruction on Friday, March 29.  It's only day surgery, but there is some recovery time involved, so I will be out for two weeks.  I will be back to school after April vacation, on Monday, April 22 (Earth Day!).

In my absence, Mr. Lee has arranged for a wonderful substitute teacher.  Her name is Mrs. Bayazitov.  I have completely planned the eleven days, and Mrs. Bayazitov will be supported by my grade level colleagues and the other teachers who work in our classroom.  Please email me if you have questions or concerns during this time.  I will be checking my email, and I will do my best to be responsive.

Your children asked good questions today about what things will be like while I am out.  We made a list of all the things we need to get ready for Mrs. Bayazitov and all the important things she should know about our class.   We will work on preparing everything when we get back to school on Monday, including making the all-important "Welcome!" poster for Mrs. Bayazitov.  The students were very excited about that.

Although I like to think I'm irreplaceable and absolutely essential, I know that actually this is not the case.  I'm sure the eleven days will fly by, and the children will become very attached to Mrs. Bayazitov.

Thank you for all of your help and support.

Fantastic Performance

So many of you came to our assembly performance.  Thank you!  Your kids were awesome!  Please click on the link to see it again and again!
Have a great weekend.

Monday Memo 3/18/19

Good evening!

Assembly
Hope to see you tomorrow at 9 at the assembly!  Your children have a great song to sing.  We'll be sure to record it, so no worries if you can't make it.  Please remind your child to wear green!

Sharing
We enjoyed talking about maps and hearing about your child's bedroom this week for sharing.  All of the students loved discussing their bedroom and showing their map on the document camera.  This week, we are sharing our favorite game.  It can be a board game, a circle game, a game they learned at camp, a game they created.... the possibilities are endless!  We are not sharing digital games or sports.

Penpals
Hopefully you received this on Thursday, but if not, I copied the assignment here:

Flat Stanley Penpal Homework

The Flat Stanleys have arrived from my aunt’s class in California!  Enclosed is:

1)  Letter from your second grade pen pal in California

2)  Flat Stanley

3) Flat Stanley travel journal

The homework is:

1)  Take VERY good care of your penpal’s Flat Stanley.
You may decorate him, if you wish. Remember, our class
will be mailing Flat Stanley back to your penpal in California.

2)  Think about where you might take Flat Stanley.
You could take Flat Stanley somewhere close to home,
or maybe Flat Stanley would enjoy being in your backyard
or hanging out in your home?  Take at least 2 photos (but no more than 5)
of your Flat Stanley. *

3)  Complete the Flat Stanley Travel Journal.
Neat handwriting is a must because we want your penpal to be able to read it.

All 3 things (Flat Stanley, photos, and journal) are due on Monday, March 25th.

*If you are unable to print the photos,
your parents may email the 2-5 photos to me
miriam_morrison@wayland.k12.ma.us and I will print them.

We will FaceTime with our penpals on Tuesday!

Social Studies
Your child traveled to Africa last week, and Ms. Niles was their tour guide.
This week, we will study Europe and Asia!

Bookmark Winners
Congratulations to Bo Morneweck and Lulu Bradford for their work in the Bookmark contest.
proud of them when Ms. Flannery announced their names at assembly.

Open Circle

Have a great week! Please contact me with any questions or concerns.

Monday Memo 3/11/18

Assembly Performance

The second grade will make a special presentation at the next school assembly:  Monday, March 18 at 9AM.  We asked all our second graders to wear GREEN!  Hope you can make it!

Conferences
It has been such a pleasure speaking to you about your child's progress.  Here is the schedule for this week's conferences:

Hello, Baby!
Thank you so much for sending in the baby photo of your child.  We will share them this week!  We are also sharing Maps of our Bedrooms.

Film Festival
We had a great time at our Film Festival.  My dad loved the public service announcements and the book the second grade wrote for him:  Plastic Is Not Fantastic.  Each second graders' opinion piece is in the book.  If you read it, you'll never get a cup of coffee in a styrofoam cup again.
Passport Around the World
Your child loves this song!  We've learned about North America, and last week our class traveled to South America, where their tour guide Ms. Knox taught them all about that continent.  Next week, it's on to Africa with Ms. Niles!
Have a great week!  Please contact me with any questions or concerns.

Monday Memo 3/4/19

Happy March!

I just love a good snow day.  I hope yours was fun.  PLEASE make sure your child has all their snow gear for recess tomorrow, including boots for outside and shoes for inside.  I'm really trying to make sure there is no water on the floor of our classroom so no one slips, especially me!

Film Festival

All of the second grade teachers are so proud of our student activists!  We are looking forward to holding our second annual Second Grade Film Festival on Thursday.  Of course Pat Conaway will be  our special guest, and he will be the recipient of the James P. Lee Lifetime Achievement Award.

Conferences

I am very much looking forward to speaking to you this week about your child's progress.  Here is a link to the conference schedule.
